Personality & Life with Us

We first met Barolo in April 2017 at Emil and Barbara Inauen’s place. He was just a yearling then – young, full of energy, and impossible to forget. Even during that very first visit, he completely captured my heart. So it was no surprise that when we said goodbye a year later, we wished we could have taken him with us right then and there.
That wish had to wait a little longer, but in February 2020, our dream finally came true – we could pick up Barolo to follow us. From the very first moment, he embraced his new life with us. He instantly fell in love with Joël, who was just four months old at the time.
Six months later, we moved to Moräng and started building our own kennel. With only six dogs – two of them still puppies – Barolo didn’t really have a choice: he had to become our lead dog. We already knew he had what it takes. We’d worked with him and his siblings before, and we had seen his potential. And he proved us right – in every way.
Today, Barolo is not only our main lead dog, but also the mentor to the next generation. He leads with heart, focus, and quiet strength.
And when the day is done, he’s happiest curled up on the sofa, soaking in all the cuddles he can get.

Meaning of the name

Blixten – the Swedish word for lightning – is a name full of energy and symbolism. It was chosen not only because of the heavy thunderstorms just before her birth, but also as a nod to her father’s name. Born into a litter where nature seemed to set the tone, her name captures both her electric spirit and her stormy roots.
With her striking black and white coat and bright blue eyes, Blixten is only the second dog in our kennel with such a piercing gaze. Her look is bold and unforgettable – just like her name. Lightning in name, lightning in soul.

Personality & Life with Us

Though small in size, Blixten has a huge personality. She’s affectionate and loves to cuddle, always eager for close contact – but don’t be fooled by her soft side. She also has a wild streak, and nothing makes her happier than racing around with her brother Tornado, the two of them living up to their stormy names every single day.
Blixten is currently in training to become a lead dog, and she’s already showing strong potential. She’s focused, responsive, and quick to pick up new things – a little firecracker with brains and heart. Whether she’s charging ahead on the trail or curled up in our arms, Blixten brings light and life wherever she goes.

While the Buck from the film is known for his strength and leadership, our Buck is carving out his own path. His name connects him to a story of deep bonds between humans and dogs – something that’s just as true in our own lives.

When Buck was a puppy, he seemed like the calm one of the group – a bit reserved, quietly observing the world. But that phase didn’t last long. These days, he’ll make sure you don’t get past him unless you stop to play. He’s playful, alert, and full of energy, often with a cheeky glint in his eyes.
Buck has a beautiful, smooth running style, making him a solid team dog. However, he sometimes gets a little distracted – especially when something catches his attention and triggers the strong hunting instinct he inherited from his mother, Ruby. Still, he works well in the team and gives his best when it matters.

Personality & Life with Us

Enzo came to us in early May 2025, at just over four months old, he had passed through the hands of three different owners — not counting his breeder - before arriving here. This sad journey is a clear example of what happens when a dog’s true nature and needs aren’t fully understood. A hunting dog like Enzo cannot thrive simply as a companion dog living in an apartment. He needs mental stimulation, physical challenges, and a purpose to truly flourish. Without this, frustration and unhappiness quickly take over.
With us, Enzo has finally found a real home — one where his instincts are respected and nurtured. We are training him for moose hunting, giving him the focus and activity his breed demands. At the same time, he lives alongside our sled dogs and will soon join them in pulling the sled, becoming a true team member.
Enzo’s story is a gentle reminder to anyone thinking about bringing a dog into their life: it’s essential to choose a dog that fits your lifestyle and to understand the responsibilities involved. Kenai came to us in April 2025. Originally he was named Max, we had to find a new name — not an easy task for a dog with so much quiet charm. But Kenai came to mind instantly, and it felt just right. Inspired by the wild landscapes of Alaska, the name carries a sense of open skies, deep forests, and untamed spirit — much like the dog himself.
He came to us from Coldnose Huskies, a respected Swedish racing kennel, and unlike most of his houndy-looking siblings, Kenai has a classic Siberian look: dense fur, soulful eyes, and a proud stance. Though he's a pure Alaskan Husky, there's something timeless in his appearance — something that makes his name feel like it was always meant to be his.

At first, Kenai can come across as a bit shy. He watches from a distance, eyes full of curiosity, taking it all in. He’s a cuddler at heart, and once the trust is there, it’s clear he just wants to be close.

We didn’t choose Lumene’s name ourselves, but somehow, from the very beginning, it felt right. The word Lumeneimmediately evoked something light-filled and gentle — perhaps a connection to lumen, the Latin word for light, or simply the calm brightness she brings to those around her.
Whether or not that was ever the intention behind her name, it has always resonated with us. Soft, quiet, and full of presence — Lumene carries her name with quiet dignity.

Personality & Life with Us

We first met Lumene in autumn 2018 while working for Mats Pettersson in Kiruna. Back then, she was part of his main race team — often in lead — but stood out from the pack with her sensitive nature. She didn’t always eat well and needed a bit more patience and understanding than others. But from the first moment, there was a special connection between us.
When we returned to Kiruna in 2020 and short after started to build our own kennel, we knew we needed a reliable, experienced dog — and Lumene was the perfect fit. Since then, she has made herself truly at home. Ironically, the once-picky eater has turned into a full-blown food enthusiast — we sometimes joke she’s trying to make up for lost time.
Although we officially retired her after the 2023/2024 season, she’s still going strong. As long as the temperatures stay mild and she’s feeling good, she loves to join shorter tours and training runs. Once the thermometer drops too far, though, not even food can lure her off the sofa.
Now in her senior years, Lumene enjoys life on her own terms — calm, steady, and still very much the queen of quiet moments.

When we received a list of young dogs available from Coldnose Huskies, Yvonne was clear: Mavas was the one. Even though she usually isn’t drawn to black-and-white dogs, something about this particular girl stood out. It was an instant connection – and despite her reserved nature, Mavas turned out to be exactly the right choice.

Mavas joined us around her first birthday, coming from a well-known Swedish racing kennel with an impressive pedigree. At first, she was shy around new people and needed time to find her place. But she is observant and clever, learning quickly by watching the other dogs – whether it's helpful behaviours or cheeky tricks.
She bonded closely with Yvonne and clearly sees her as her person. Especially when it comes to leading, Mavas works best when Yvonne is on the sled. While she still needs to grow in confidence to become a true lead dog, the potential is definitely there. On the trail, she runs with energy and enthusiasm, always eager to be part of the action.
Off the trail, Mavas is a bit of a contradiction. She often doesn't like to be held or physically restrained – yet she absolutely loves to cuddle. After a run, when it’s time to take off her harness or check her paws, she might growl loudly in protest… while simultaneously wagging her tail. Her body language is full of mixed signals, but one thing is always clear: she’s happy to be here, and we're happy to have her.

Max is on his way to becoming one of our next-generation lead dogs – and he’s not just dreaming about it, he’s already proving he’s got what it takes. He’s currently being trained by Barolo, and during the Femundløpet, when Barolo had to drop out, Max stepped up without hesitation and led the team in single lead, showing calm focus and excellent trail sense.
Of course, there’s still room to grow. He’s learning to face storms and tough conditions with more confidence – especially when his father isn’t there to guide him. But the foundation is strong, and we believe in him completely.
Off the trail, Max is a gentle soul. He can be a bit picky with food, but we’re working on it together. One thing is certain: Max has come a long way from the smallest pup to a promising leader – and his journey is only just beginning.

At the same time, some traces of her time as an only dog still show. Especially during free run or cuddling sessions, she sometimes forgets that she’s now part of a bigger group and not the one calling the shots. With other females, it's best to be a little cautious — Mose has a strong personality and doesn’t back down easily.
But once you’ve gained her trust, she’s incredibly affectionate. Mose loves attention and physical closeness, seeking out her people with quiet determination. Under her confident surface, she’s a loyal and soft-hearted companion — the kind who stays close once she’s chosen you.

Nala gets along effortlessly with her mother Lumene and her brothers, both when playing and when working in the team. Her work ethic in harness is strong, though she sometimes tests new drivers a bit if she doesn’t feel a real connection with them.
At first glance, she might seem a little reserved or even bossy, but once she trusts you, she becomes incredibly affectionate. We don’t know the original idea behind his name, but Olaf is a classic and widely used name throughout Scandinavia. With deep Nordic roots, it’s traditionally associated with strength and heritage – a fitting match for an experienced and reliable sled dog. Even though we didn’t name him ourselves, it suits him perfectly: simple, strong, and unmistakably Scandinavian.
His appearance adds to the image – with his upright ears and golden-red fur, Olaf reminds many of a Finnish Spitz. His looks and name together make him a real character, both on and off the trail.

Personality & Life with Us

Olaf was born in 2015 in a small race kennel in Norway and trained to lead from an early age. He gained experience in long-distance racing before joining our team in 2021. At that time, we were surrounded by wild and inexperienced young dogs mostly – and Olaf brought exactly the calm and focus we needed. Confident at the front and steady in all kinds of conditions, he quickly became a reliable anchor in our training and tour routines.
Besides his talent in harness, Olaf is always ready for cuddles. Though he doesn’t like it too wild around him, he search for the position next to you to get the attention he needs.
Now at the threshold of retirement, Olaf gets to decide what he wants. As long as his body agrees, he’s welcome to join training runs and tours – and judging by his energy and enthusiasm, he’s far from done. We’re sure he’ll tell us when it’s time to take it slow, but until then, we’re lucky to have him still out there, doing what he loves.

Despite his size and energy, he’s easy to handle, eager to please, and always excited for the next run. He’s got a great appetite, a solid work ethic, and a personality that fits snugly into both the racing team and our hearts.
Pumba reminds us that strength doesn't have to be loud or flashy. Sometimes it comes in the form of steady reliability, a wagging tail, and an enthusiastic bounce that never quite disappears.

Personality & Life with Us

From the start, Rafiki has been a favorite among guests. His calm confidence, soft fur, and friendly personality make him irresistible – whether he's posing like a pro or gently nudging for more attention. He’s the kind of dog who knows exactly where the camera is and how to steal the show.
But Rafiki’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. In the winter of 2023/24, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that meant months of recovery – and months of house life. He quickly claimed the sofa as his own, and once he’s decided he wants that spot, good luck trying to convince him otherwise. Sharing space with Rafiki means making room, even if that means curling into the last corner while he stretches out like royalty.
This time of rest was hard for a young dog full of energy and drive. He loves to run, jump, and be part of everything, so not being able to move freely was tough. But it also brought us closer. Seeing his patience, his spirit, and his quiet way of adapting made us love him even more. Over winter 2025, he slowly returned to harness in our puppy training runs, and we hope to see him back on longer tours soon.
Whatever the future holds for him in the team, one thing is clear: Rafiki has already found his place – in our lives, on our photos, and in many hearts.

Ruby – a name that sparkles with warmth and energy. While many might think of the red gemstone first, Ruby is also the name of an important checkpoint along the legendary Iditarod Trail in Alaska. That makes it a fitting name for a sled dog with roots in long-distance mushing. It carries the spirit of adventure, the echo of snowy trails, and a quiet determination.
For us, her name also marks a connection to a certain phase in our journey – she was already Ruby when we met her, and somehow it suited her so well that we never questioned it. Strong, beautiful, and reliable – just like the place and the stone.

Personality & Life with Us

Ruby was still a yearling when we met her for the first time at Mats Pettersson’s kennel in 2018. Ruby and Raphael had that quiet, mutual understanding from day one. When we started to build up our own kennel in 2020 it was clear that she had to become part of our team – and luckily, she felt at home with us right away.
In the early days, she was rather shy and often a picky eater. That changed completely here. These days, her enthusiasm for food is so great that you have to be quick – or her nose might be in the bucket before the food even hits the bowl. And while she’s still a sensitive dog at heart, especially in challenging situations on the trail, she now walks through the kennel with far more confidence than before.
After several strong seasons running in lead next to Barolo, Ruby has recently handed over that position to the next generation. These days, she brings steadiness and experience to our B-team, always ready to work, always reliable. And when you look at her calm, knowing expression, you realize: she may not seek the spotlight, but she has long since earned her place as one of the true cornerstones of our kennel.

Among her siblings, she’s the elegant one – the “beauty queen,” as we sometimes call her. But there’s more to Shadow than just looks. Her name may whisper, but her personality speaks volumes.

Shadow is clever, affectionate, and full of character. She loves to snuggle and isn’t shy about making sure you notice her when she wants attention – which happens quite often. In the kennel, she’s known for her strong attachment to humans and her eagerness for closeness. And while she may look sweet and quiet, she’s often the one stirring up the wildest games behind the scenes.
In harness, Shadow has become a great working dog. She’s capable of running in lead and handles it well, though she’s probably not made for the main lead role. On the trail, she’s also known for one of her more vocal habits – barking persistently at her neighbor if things don’t go her way. Let’s just say she’s not one to stay silent about her opinions.

Sky – a name that sounds light and free, yet carries a deeper connection to her roots. Her parents are named Atlas and Venus: one a titan from Greek mythology, burdened with holding up the heavens, the other a glowing planet in our universe. In that context, Sky feels like the natural link between them – the space that connects earth and stars, strength and beauty.
But, there is a second meaning, given by Joël: the energetic flying puppy from Paw Patrol. And to be honest, that’s not completely off either. With her playful energy and confident nature, Sky definitely brings a spark to every situation – always ready for fun, and often one step ahead of the rest.

Personality & Life with Us

Sky was born in a small Norwegian racing kennel and came to us as a puppy. She’s still very young, but already stands out with her tall, strong build and her bold personality. While many dogs her age are still figuring things out, Sky moves through the world like she’s done it all before – cheerful, fearless, and full of curiosity.
In our puppy training sessions, she showed early signs of being a reliable worker. She listens well, stays focused, and clearly enjoys running. Her body is built for it, and her mindset seems just as promising. We’re excited to see how she continues to develop – the potential is definitely there.
Off the trail, Sky is a joy to have around. She’s playful and wild, loves human attention, and often wins people over within seconds. With her positive energy and open heart, she makes it hard not to fall in love with her.

In Latin, Stella means star – and there’s no question why this name felt just right. With her bright coat and elegant build, she stood out from the beginning as the “beauty” of the litter. Her light coloring makes her easy to spot in the team, like a star among the pack, and there’s a natural grace to the way she moves and carries herself.
Together with her sister Luna, she reflects the sky above us – moon and stars – and the connection they share is just as special. As daughters of our once-in-a-lifetime dog Ranger, they carry not only his genetics but also his legacy. Stella might not look exactly like her father, but her personality tells the story very clearly.

Stella is bold, fast, and just a little bit crazy – in the best possible way. She’s crazy for food, crazy for climbing, and crazy for running. That passion makes her an incredibly fun dog to have around, and sometimes also a bit of a challenge. When she wants something, she finds creative (and often athletic) ways to get it.
On the trail, she is a true worker. Whether in lead, team, or wheel, she gives 100% and never holds back. Her drive is deeply rooted, as if the desire to run was written directly into her DNA. Even as a young dog, she showed a natural understanding of the trail and quickly earned her place in the team.
At home, she keeps us on our toes with her energy and antics. But she also has a softer side – cuddly, clever, and always close to her sister. Stella brings brightness to every day, not just in name, but in everything she does.

Storm – a name that speaks for itself. It carries a sense of force and movement, of power and unpredictability. And while we weren’t the ones to name him, it suits him perfectly: a dog full of energy, intensity, and emotion, sometimes quiet and distant like the calm before a storm, and other times impossible to overlook.
With his piercing blue eyes – the first in our kennel – and his tall, lean frame, Storm definitely makes an impression. His name reflects both his physical presence and his inner world: strong, a little wild, but always moving forward.

Personality & Life with Us

Storm joined our kennel in spring 2023. Physically he’s one of the biggest dogs in the team, almost as tall as Barolo, but in his heart he stays a puppy. He needed a bit longer to mature, and while he hasn't yet had the chance to prove himself in the race team, he’s already shown that he’s a powerful and determined worker – especially when it comes to running in harness, where his focus is unmatched.
Off the trail, it takes him a bit of time to warm up. He’s often reserved around new people, especially in the kennel, where he may try to keep his distance at first. But once you’ve gained his trust, Storm transforms into an affectionate cuddler who doesn’t want the attention to stop. He becomes one of those dogs who quietly finds a place in your heart – and stays there.
One of his challenges has been keeping weight on – he can be a bit picky plus he burns through energy so fast, not the best combination. He eats like someone who watches their figure, even though he could use every extra calorie. Despite this, he keeps pushing forward with every training run, ready to give everything – true to the name he carries.

His mostly white fur is marked by three roughly symmetrical grey spots on his back, but what really catches your eye are the backs of his ears—a unique blend of white, grey, and beige that gives him a look all his own. It’s a subtle detail, but one that perfectly reflects his distinct personality.
Just like his namesake from The Lion King, Timon can sometimes be a bit cheeky and persistent. He loves to be the center of attention and isn’t shy about asking for it—sometimes in the form of gentle nibbling on your hands, which he uses as his way of showing affection.

It’s no mystery where Tornado got his name – it’s a direct reference to both the weather and his father, Storm. But as it turns out, the name fits him in more ways than one. His energy, his movement, his entire presence – it’s as if a little whirlwind lives inside him. The Latin phrase "nomen est omen" has rarely been more accurate.
Tornado’s appearance is just as unique as his name. With his light brown coat, long limbs, and that striking white triangle on his chest outlined in black, he looks like he’s wearing a tuxedo with a crisp white shirt underneath – all set for a formal dinner, if he could just sit still long enough.

Zazu is named after the cheeky little bird and royal advisor in The Lion King — a character full of wit, loyalty, and just the right amount of sass. As part of our “Lion King” litter, Zazu carries his name with pride, even if he’s more attached to his people than to royal duties.
Like his namesake, he’s observant, clever, and always close to the action — though in his case, the action usually means sticking close to Yvonne’s side. If there’s a shadow to be cast, Zazu will be in it.

Zazu shares a deep connection with his father Ranger, Yvonne’s once-in-a-lifetime dog. Though he doesn’t look like his father — his coat is a soft, silvery grey — his personality is almost an exact replica. He’s clever, sensitive, always thinking, always present. He works hard in the team, usually in wheel or team position. Just like his dad, he understands commands perfectly — he just prefers not to lead.
Off the trail, he’s incredibly affectionate. On hikes, his favorite place is curled up next to Yvonne in the tent, content just to be close. And when he’s loose around the yard, he never forgets the most important destination: the food room — another habit he clearly inherited.
Zazu may not have been meant to fill anyone’s paw prints, but he’s done it in his own way — with quiet charm, unwavering loyalty, and a heart that seems to remember.

Personality & Life with Us

When Raffi started working as a guide in Äkäskero in 2015, Gizmo was already ten years old and about to retire from his career as a tour dog. But what was meant to be his final season turned into the beginning of something special: Gizmo became Raffi’s favourite and most trusted lead dog, guiding countless teams through the arctic landscape with quiet confidence and unmatched reliability.
After that winter, the two spent a few months together in Switzerland before returning north, where Gizmo officially retired – and embraced the sofa life to the fullest. But he never really stopped leading. Whether it was teaching younger dogs how to behave (or misbehave), or showing everyone how to sneak cheese, salmon, berries or even ice cream – Gizmo always knew exactly what he wanted. His partner-in-crime, Ranger, learned a lot from him – for better or worse.
In early 2020, a fast-growing and aggressive cancer was discovered, and despite our best efforts, we had to say goodbye to Gizmo in March. He didn’t get to witness the start of our own kennel – but his legacy is deeply woven into it. He shaped us, taught us, and made us laugh. We still miss him, every single day.

Personality & Life with Us

Ranger was Yvonne’s once-in-a-lifetime dog. When she started training the race team in Äkäskero in 2014, he had just turned two and was entering his first racing season. At first, there was no favourite – but that didn’t last long. Over the course of that winter, Ranger made his way into Yvonne’s heart with his boundless energy, his unshakable enthusiasm, and his unmistakable joy for running. From then on, he was her dog – even if not officially right away.
When Yvonne, Raffi, and Gizmo left Äkäskero in 2017, Ranger came with them, of course. He had become part of the family. A year later, he finally got the chance to race alongside Yvonne as her own dog – something that meant the world to both of them. Ranger never tired. He was always happy, always ready, always barking and jumping with excitement at the starting line or during breaks. His energy was unmatched and his love for running only rivalled by the bond he shared with Yvonne.
Ranger laid the foundation for our kennel – not just in spirit, but also as the father of Luna, Stella, and the entire “Lion King” litter. He passed on his energy, his drive, and a big piece of his heart. In autumn 2021, he left us suddenly and far too soon. The pain of that loss is still with us. There will never be another dog like him.
